SOLO-SEMARANG TRAIN JOURNEY TO BECOME SMOOTHER, KLATEN STATION TO GET A FACELIFT

Surakarta – Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi delivered good news for the people of Solo and its surrounding areas. The long-awaited project to construct an elevated railway line at Simpang Joglo is now in its final stages. This elevated railway is expected to begin operations on November 1, 2024.

During his visit to the project site on Sunday (13/10), traveling via a lorry from Kadipiro Station, the Minister of Transportation confirmed that construction progress is on track. The load test is scheduled for October 23 and 24. "This load test will be conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR). Once declared safe, the Solo Balapan-Kadipiro elevated railway line will be ready for operation," the Minister said.

Addressing Traffic Congestion and Enhancing Safety

The railway crossing at Simpang Joglo has long been a congestion hotspot, often causing traffic jams. It is hoped that the new elevated rail will resolve this issue. Head of BTP Class I Semarang, Rudi Pitoyo, added that the construction of the Solo Balapan-Kadipiro-Kalioso double-track line will not only alleviate traffic caused by the intersection of train tracks and vehicle routes but also enhance the operational safety of long-distance trains traveling between Solo and Semarang. "With the elevated rail, train and other public transportation will move more smoothly and safely," Rudi stated.

After inspecting the progress of the railway construction, the Minister also reviewed the ongoing renovations at Klaten Station. Klaten Station, which holds a long history as the first station between Solo and Yogyakarta, is being transformed into a more artistic and passenger-friendly facility, while still preserving its original structure. "We want to make Klaten Station one of Central Java's transportation icons. With improved amenities, we hope passengers will feel more comfortable and at ease when using the train. There is also potential to develop culinary and tourism hubs around the station, making Klaten even more vibrant," Budi Karya explained.

As part of efforts to improve services for the community, Klaten Station will eventually introduce line separation for long-distance and local trains. The current station will focus on serving long-distance trains, while a new station, to be built across from the terminal, will cater to local trains.

"With this line separation, we aim to make train travel more efficient and offer passengers easier access to the types of trains that best suit their needs," the Minister added.

Improved Connectivity

To further enhance connectivity in Central Java, the Adi Soemarmo Airport Train will expand its service to Madiun. "Our studies indicate significant demand in Madiun. The airport train will serve the Madiun-Adi Soemarmo Airport route, making it easier for residents to access train services to the airport," he said.

With the completion of various railway infrastructure projects in Central Java, the government hopes to improve the quality of public transportation and stimulate economic growth in the region
