RAISING SAFETY AWARENESS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS: BTP SEMARANG ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO BE RAIL CROSSING SAFETY AMBASSADORS
Semarang – The Railway Engineering Center Class I Semarang (BTP Semarang) has once again demonstrated its commitment to raising public awareness about the importance of safety around railway crossings. This time, BTP Semarang, in collaboration with the Facilities and Safety Section and the Pekalongan Service Unit, visited several elementary schools in the northern region of Central Java.
The schools visited included SD 01 Tegorejo (Kendal Regency), SDN Kasepuhan 07 (Batang Regency), SDN 01 Cibiyuk (Pemalang Regency), and SDN 01 Munjungagung (Tegal Regency). These schools were chosen because they are located near railway crossings, which makes students more potentially exposed if they are not careful.
During the visit, the BTP Semarang team not only provided safety education about railway crossings but also held quizzes and interactive discussions with the students. Through these activities, it is hoped that children will learn early on about the importance of obeying traffic signs, especially around railway crossings.
"We want to make children aware that they should always be careful when crossing railway tracks. By educating them from an early age, we hope they can encourage those around them to be more careful," said Tonggam Ferdinand, Head of Facilities and Railway Safety Section at BTP Semarang.
In addition to visiting schools, the BTP Semarang team also conducted direct inspections at several level crossings. They reminded road users to always exercise caution when crossing and not to bypass closed crossing gates.
As a form of appreciation for the hard work of the crossing gatekeepers (PJL) in maintaining safety, BTP Semarang also provided social aid packages. "We hope that with all the efforts made, the number of accidents at railway crossings can continue to be reduced. Safety is very important, and we all have a responsibility to protect it," added Tonggam.
Safety Tips for Crossing Railway Tracks:
• Follow traffic signs: Obey the instructions on traffic signs. • Stop briefly: Before crossing, ensure that your vehicle comes to a complete stop. • Look left, look right, ensure it's safe, and then cross: Make sure no trains are coming from either direction. • Do not bypass the crossing gate: Wait until the crossing gate is fully open before proceeding.
BTP Semarang hopes that these educational activities will increase public awareness, especially among children, about the importance of safety around railway lines. This way, the number of accidents at level crossings can continue to decrease.
