GoI and JICA signed the Minutes of Discussion of Appraisal of East-West Corridor MRT Development Project Phase 1.

Jakarta - The Government of Indonesia (GoI) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed the Minutes of Discussion (MoD of Appraisal Mission) of the East-West Corridor MRT Project Phase 1.

The signing was carried out on Saturday 11 November 2023, by Director General of Railways Risal Wasal, Director of Bilateral Funding of Bappenas Kurniawan Ariadi, Secretary of DKI Jakarta Province Joko Agus Setiono, and Director of MRT Jakarta Tuhiyat, representing the Indonesian government, with Chief of Representative Indonesia Office JICA Mr. Yasui Takehiro. It was witnessed by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono and the Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan, Mr. Nagai Katsuro, at the Ministry of Transportation headquarters in Jakarta.

"I sincerely hope that the East-West corridor MRT project progresses smoothly and is completed on time, ensuring its prompt utilization by the community," stated the Minister of Transportation.

The Minister of Transportation explained that the construction of MRT mass transportation is in accordance with the National Railway Master Plan to increase the mass transportation system and the number of passengers. 

"We must consistently implement various rail-based urban mass transportation developments such as the MRT, LRT, and KRL," the Minister said.

Furthermore, the Minister welcomed the active participation of the Japanese side to help build mass transportation infrastructure in Indonesia. "In addition to soft loans, other creative funding schemes are needed to meet unmet needs. I hope that in the future there will be more cooperation between the Indonesian government and the Japanese government in the railroad sector," said the Minister of Transportation.

On the same occasion, Director General of Railways Risal Wasal said that after the signing of the MoD, the Ministry of Transportation, through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA), will immediately complete the administration of this project. "We are targeting this administrative matter to be completed soon so that the east-west MRT development process can begin in 2024," said Risal.

The East-West corridor of the Jakarta MRT will stretch along 84,1 km from Balaraja, Tangerang, to Cikarang, Bekasi. In its construction, it will be divided into 4 (four) stages of work, namely Phase 1 Phase 1 (Tomang-Medan Satria along 30,1 km), Phase 1 Phase 2 (Kembangan-Tomang along 9,2 km), Phase 2 East (Medan Satria-Cikarang along 20,5 km), and Phase 2 West (Kembangan Balaraja along 29,9 km).

"The East-West corridor of the Jakarta MRT will be integrated with the North-South corridor, with a meeting point at Thamrin Station, which is currently under construction," Risal said.

In the early stages of development, Phase 1 of the East-West corridor of the Jakarta MRT will have 21 stations consisting of 8 underground stations and 13 elevated stations. In addition, at this stage a depot will also be built in the Rorotan area with a 5,9 km access road. (DJKA Public Relations/RY/RDL/SR/BRD)
