Indonesia adalah Negara kedua di Asia ( setelah India ) yang mempunyai jaringan kereta api tertua. Cina dan Jepang baru menyusul kemudian. Setelah periode tanam paksa (1830-1850), hasil pertanian di Jawa tidak lagi sekedar untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sendiri tetapi juga untuk pasar internasional. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan sarana transportasi untuk mengangkut hasil pertanian dari pedalaman ke kota-kota pelabuhan.

  • 1864

  • 1876-1922
    The construction of the Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, and Sulawesi railways lines began.

  • 1928
    The length of Indonesian railways and trams is 7,464 km, 4,089 km are owned by the government and 3,375 km are owned by the private sector.

  • 1942-1945
    The Indonesian Railways was taken over by Japan and changed its name to Rikuyu Sokyuku (Railways Service).

  • 1945
    On August 17, 1945 Indonesia was independent. Then the Japanese-controlled railways station and headquarters were taken over, which culminated in the Bandung Railways Headquarters on September 28, 1945, known as Indonesian Railways Day.

  • 1946
    The Dutch returned to Indonesia, re-establishing the Staatssporwegen/Verenigde Spoorwegbedrif (SS/VC), a combination of the SS and all private railway companies (except Delispoorweg Maatschappij/DSM).

  • 1950
    The transfer and merger between DKARI and SS/VS became Djawatan Kereta Api (DKA). On May 25, DKA changed to the State Railway Company (PNKA).

  • 1971
    The government changes the structure of PNKA into a Railway Service Company (PJKA)

  • 1981
    On May 18, 1981, PT INKA was established, which is a rolling stock and automotive company

  • 1991
    PJKA changed its form to the General Railway Company (Perumka).

    Enactment of Law No. 13 of 1992 concerning Railways

    Perumka changed to a Limited Liability Company, PT Kereta Api (Persero)

    On June 17, 2008, the establishment of PT MRT Jakarta with one of the scopes of its activities is the exploitation and development of MRT infrastructure and facilities. On August 12, 2008, the formation of PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) is one of the subsidiaries within PT KAI that manages the Jabodetabek Commuter Train.

    Publication of Ministerial Regulation No. 43 of 2011 concerning the National Railway Master Plan (RIPNas) as a reference for the development of all elements of the implementation of the national railways. PT KAI (Persero) launched a new logo.

    On July 25, 2013, the Kualanamu Airport Access Train was operated by PT Railink, which is a subsidiary of PT KAI with PT Angkasa Pura II. In September 2013 the construction of the Jakarta MRT

    On 9 September 2015 groundbreaking for the commencement of the development of the Jabodetabek Light Rail Transit (LRT) network.

  • 2016
    On January 21, 2016, the groundbreaking of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), which is a joint venture established to build a high-speed train that spans 150 kilometers between Jakarta and Bandung. Changes in Government Regulation No. 72 of 2009 became Government Regulation No. 61 of 2016 concerning Railways Traffic and Transportation.

  • 2017
    Changes in Government Regulation No. 56 of 2009 became Government Regulation No. 6 of 2017 concerning the Operation of Railways. The length of the Indonesian railway line owned by the government is 5,368 km. The current railway operators include PT KAI, PT Railink, PT KCJ, PT MRT Jakarta, PT KCIC.
