IMPROVING RAILWAY SAFETY, BTP JATIM REPLACES BH374 BAYEMAN BRIDGE

The East Java Region Railway Engineering Center (BTP Jatim) of the Ministry of Transportation has completed the replacement of the Building Hikmat (BH) 374 bridge this year. The old bridge, which was hit by flash floods causing a decline and shift in the pillars, has been replaced with a new one. The BH374 bridge was a colonial-era bridge from the Dutch East Indies and consisted of three sections. The new bridge has only two sections, and the replacement was done on the plot between Bayeman Station and Probolinggo Station.

The replacement of the BH374 bridge was completed in 8 months starting in March 2022 and was broadcasted live. The Head of the East Java Region Railway Engineering Center, Mohamad Zulkarnain, stated that the initial condition of the BH374 bridge was in an alarming stage when inspected. The bridge pillars had decreased and shifted since being hit by floods a few years ago. “Temporary supports were installed in 2017 to prevent the pillars from shifting, but this had an impact on train travel, which had to reduce speed when entering the area.” He added

"Last year, during an inspection conducted by BTP East Java and colleagues from Daop 9 Jember, we decided that the bridge must be replaced with a new one as soon as possible," Zulkarnain explained.

The new BH374 train bridge has 2 spans in the form of a frame and plate wall bridge which is larger than the previous bridge and can accommodate trains with higher loads. It is expected that this will increase the safety and comfort of railroad users. During the bridge replacement, the old bridge was shifted to be replaced with the new one, and trains were able to pass through at a limited speed until the bridge was deemed suitable for operation at normal speed.

The Surabaya Kota-Probolinggo-Jember-Banyuwangi railway line was opened on 1 October  1897 by the Dutch East Indies railway company Staatsspoorwegen (SS). Initially, this line was primarily used for freight transportation, and it wasn't until later that it started to serve passengers as well. This line has several branches, including one that goes to Panarukan. However, over time, the infrastructure of this line has become outdated, and as a result, the East Java Region Railway Engineering Center has been making improvements to both the lines and the operating facilities.
