BTP JATIM AND IRPS START PRESERVATION OF RAILWAY ASSETS AT MOJOKERTO STATION

As part of an effort to preserve historical objects, the East Java Region Railway Engineering Center has collaborated with the Indonesian Railway Preservation Society (IRPS) and PT KAI Daop 8 Surabaya to begin preservation activities for historical railway assets located on the west side of Mojokerto Station. This is the initial stage of a plan to preserve all historical railway objects at the location, including an ex-water funnel, an ex-water tank, and an ex-turntable that were used by steam locomotives until the 1970s.

This preservation is a form of education to the wider community that these preserved objects were once instrumental in the world of national railways. The work process will be carried out until December 2022, with the focus on cleaning the area around the preservation location.

According to Alfaviega Septian Pravangasta, the East Java Region Railway Engineering Center's public relations officer, the preservation procedure would be divided into two phases. "In the first phase, we established a goal that we would have something to present on National Railway Day, which falls on September 28. The former water funnel, water tank, and locomotive turntable's outside appearance should be restored to the way it was fifty years ago when it was still in use.

He continued, "The preservation area will be targeted to become an educational park that can be useful for the community, especially children, in the second phase, which will be held after National Railway Day." The site will include vintage railroad memorabilia that is anticipated to become an icon of Mojokerto Station and Mojokerto City as a whole.

After being untouched by human hands for more than 50 years, this preservation was completed. The last time these items were touched, according to Rizky Nur Ardianto, Regional Coordinator of IRPS Surabaya, was when steam locomotives were still in use up until the late 1970s. Together with BTP, we are attempting to demonstrate once more that Mojokerto Station has historical artifacts, he continued.

The Dutch East Indies railway company Staatsspoorwegen (SS), which is still in operation today, opened the Wonokromo-Tarik-Kertosono railway line on October 16, 1880, which goes through Mojokerto Station. This line passed Tarik during the time of its construction, joining the line at Sidoarjo Station. However, the Tarik-Sepanjang-Wonokromo segment was constructed on June 1, 1897, making it impossible for passing trains to pass through Sidoarjo. Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatschapij (MSM) used to run a branch from Mojokerto Station to Porong and Gemekan. The Japanese destroyed a railroad that connected Ngoro and Wates during World War II. For the steam locomotives that traveled these branch lines, Mojokerto Station's water funnel, water tank, and turntable served as facilities.
