Padang - The Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenhub RI), through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) and the Railway Engineering Centre (BTP) Class II Padang, in cooperation with the Railway Testing Centre and PT KA Properti Manajemen Area 11 Padang, held a Level Crossing Gatekeeper (PJL) Competency Certification Event on 27-28 February at the ZHM Premiere Padang.

This initiative aims to improve the quality of railway human resources (HR) in West Sumatra, especially in light of the significant improvements in railway safety infrastructure in the region. These improvements include the construction of 7.2 kilometers of inspection roads, the installation of rail markings, 6.4 kilometers of ornamental fencing, the installation of level crossing posts, 30 early warning systems (EWS), 3 pedestrian bridges (JPO/M), and the closure of 261 illegal level crossings that pose a risk to road users.

During this certification event, 36 candidates were tested, 27 from BTP Padang (25 receiving new certifications and 2 renewing their certifications) and 9 from PT KA Properti Manajemen Area 11 Padang.

"Improving safety must go hand in hand with increasing public awareness of safety facilities. Therefore, comprehensive education on railway safety in West Sumatra is necessary, as well as training and certification of railway personnel, especially level crossing gatekeepers (PJL)," said Endang Setiawan, Head of BTP Padang, in his statement.

The competency testing for railway personnel involved several stages, including theoretical exams, practical tests, interviews, and health assessments. "As the first line of defense at level crossings, gatekeepers must understand the equipment, procedures, and how to operate various tools used for safety," added Setiawan.

He expressed hope that the training and certification activities would not only improve public understanding of safety at level crossings but also contribute to reducing the number of accidents involving trains, which remain a significant concern in West Sumatra.
